What Is IB Business Management?
IB Business Management is an International Baccalaureate subject that examines how organisations make strategic decisions in a changing world. Students explore five core modules - from business structure and human resources to finance, marketing, and operations - analysed through four conceptual lenses: creativity, change, ethics, and sustainability.
The course is available at Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL). The current syllabus (first examined May 2024) places particular emphasis on the Business Management Toolkit - fifteen analytical frameworks applied across all internal and external assessments.
In short: IB Business Management teaches students to think like strategic leaders.
In 2025, the course has a mean grade of 5.0 for HL (May 2025 - 24,513 candidates) and 4.8 (November 2025 - 3608 candidates) and 4.9 for SL (May 2025 - 13,304 candidates) and 4.5 (November 2025 - 2660 candidates), making it academically rigorous while aiming at developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and strategic analysis skills all of these being highly valued by universities and employers worldwide.
Full breakdowns of business tools, frameworks, and evaluation techniques are available exclusively in the IB Business Management Activity and Case Study book.

The Four Key Concepts

Creativity - how businesses generate and apply new ideas
Change - how organisations adapt to internal and external pressures
Ethics - how businesses weigh moral responsibilities alongside profit
Sustainability - how organisations create long-term value for stakeholders and society
These concepts are not there by chance - they are the analytical framework examiners expect you to use in your IA, Extended Essay and in Paper 1, Paper 2, and 3.

Frequently Asked Questions - IB Business Management
What is the difference between IB Business Management SL and HL? Both levels cover the same five modules and the business management toolkit, but HL students study additional units within each module (including organisational culture, industrial relations, international marketing, and several operations extensions) and sit Paper 3 on social enterprise. HL typically requires around 240 hours of teaching time versus 150 for SL.
What is the IB Business Management Toolkit? The Business Management Toolkit is a collection of 15 analytical frameworks - including SWOT, Ansoff Matrix, BCG Matrix, and break-even analysis - that IB students must apply in Paper 1, Paper 2, the IA, and (for HL) Paper 3. In IB Business Management you can't access grades 6 and 7 without applying and mastering the toolkit.
Is IB Business Management hard? The course mean grade is about 5.0 at HL and 4.8 at SL, placing it in the mid-range of IB subjects in terms of difficulty. Students who struggle tend to describe theory without applying it - the key skills the course tests and the most valuable skills for this course are analysis, critical thinking and evaluation.
What are the four key concepts in IB Business Management? Creativity, change, ethics, and sustainability. These are the analytical lenses through which all five modules are examined. Using them explicitly in extended responses is one of the most reliable ways to access top-band marks.
How is the IB Business Management Internal Assessment marked? The IA is a research project of 1,900 words (SL) or 2,200 words (HL) analysing a real business issue. It is marked on four criteria: research proposal, theoretical framework, findings and analysis, and conclusion and evaluation - with a maximum of 25 marks.
